Terms of use
Last updated 18 September 2026
These are the rules for using Know Your Oat. They are short on purpose. By using the site, creating an account or claiming a cafe, you agree to them.
The short version
- The guide is written by customers and cafes. We work hard to keep it right, but milks change: always check with the cafe, especially if you have an allergy.
- Add only what you believe is true, and only content you have the right to share.
- You keep ownership of what you add. You let us show it on the site.
- Cafes can claim their listing for free. The Approved badge is earned and cannot be bought.
- The site is provided as it is, without guarantees.
1.What Know Your Oat is
Know Your Oat is a directory of cafes and the plant milks they pour. Most of it is written by customers; some of it by the cafes themselves. It is run by a small independent team based in London, United Kingdom (“we”, “us”).
2.Accuracy, and an important note on allergies
Cafes change suppliers, run out of stock and swap brands without telling anyone. A listing reflects what somebody saw or was told at a point in time. We cannot guarantee that any listing is correct, complete or current, including listings that carry the Approved badge.
Do not rely on Know Your Oat for allergy or medical decisions. We do not record allergens, ingredients or cross-contamination. Plant milks are often prepared with the same equipment as dairy and nuts. If what is in your cup matters to your health, ask the cafe every time.
3.Your account
- You need to be at least 16 to create an account.
- We sign you in with a link sent to your email, so keep that mailbox secure. You are responsible for what is done through your account.
- One person, one account. Do not create accounts to sway votes or claims.
- You can delete your account at any time from your profile, or by writing to hello@knowyouroat.com.
4.What you add
When you add a cafe, report a milk, suggest an edit, check in or upload anything, you promise that:
- it is true to the best of your knowledge, and based on a real visit or real knowledge of the cafe;
- you have the right to share it, and it does not infringe anyone else's rights;
- it is not advertising, spam, abuse, or an attempt to harm a business or promote a competitor.
You keep ownership of what you add. You give us a free, worldwide, non-exclusive licence to store, display, adapt and share it as part of Know Your Oat, including in summaries and statistics, for as long as it remains on the site. Facts about a cafe, such as which milk it pours, may stay in the guide after you leave, no longer linked to you.
5.Things you must not do
- Submit false information, fake check-ins or fake votes.
- Claim a cafe you do not run or are not authorised to represent.
- Copy the directory in bulk, scrape it, or build a competing database from it.
- Interfere with the site, probe it for weaknesses, or get around our anti-abuse checks.
- Use the site to harass anyone, or to send unsolicited messages.
If you find a security problem, please tell us privately at hello@knowyouroat.com. We will be grateful, not litigious.
6.Moderation
Volunteer moderators and our own team review suggestions and claims. We may edit, hide or remove any content, reject any claim, and suspend or close any account that breaks these terms or harms the guide. We try to be fair and to explain ourselves, but these decisions are ours.
7.If you run a cafe
You can claim your cafe's listing for free. When you do, you confirm that you own the cafe or are authorised to act for it, and that what you publish about it is accurate: its details, its milks, what you charge extra for them, its menu and its photos.
- Once a cafe is claimed, only its owners and our admins can edit the listing. You are responsible for keeping it current.
- You can only upload photos and menus that you own or have permission to use, and that do not show people who would object to appearing.
- You cannot remove customers' check-ins or ratings. Those belong to the people who made them.
- We may remove your access if a claim turns out to be wrong, if the cafe changes hands, or if the listing is used to mislead.
The Approved badge. A cafe carries the Know Your Oat Approved badge while it lists at least one plant milk and has confirmed its listing within the last 90 days. It is free, it cannot be bought, and it lapses automatically if it is not renewed. You may display the badge and our QR sticker in your cafe and on your own channels while your cafe holds the badge, and must stop when it no longer does. The badge says that you confirmed your listing. It is not a certification of your products, and you must not present it as one. See what Approved means.
8.Our content and the map data
The Know Your Oat name, logo, badge, design and software belong to us. Some cafe locations come from OpenStreetMap and are © OpenStreetMap contributors, available under the Open Database Licence. Brand names of milks and cafes belong to their owners and are used only to describe what is poured where. We are not affiliated with, or endorsed by, any milk brand unless we clearly say so.
9.Links to other services
Listings link to Google Maps, Instagram and cafes' own websites. We do not control those services and are not responsible for them.
10.No guarantees, and our liability
Know Your Oat is provided as it is. We do not promise that it will always be available, free of errors, or suitable for any particular purpose. To the fullest extent the law allows, we are not liable for losses that result from relying on a listing, from the site being unavailable, or from content added by other people.
Nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot legally be limited, such as liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, or for fraud. If you use the site as a consumer, you keep all the rights the law gives you.
11.Changes and ending
We may update these terms as the site grows. We will change the date at the top, and tell account holders by email if a change is significant. Carrying on using the site means you accept the new terms. You can stop using Know Your Oat at any time, and we may stop providing it.
12.Law
These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales, and its courts have jurisdiction. If you are a consumer living elsewhere, you also keep the protection of the mandatory laws of your own country and may bring a claim there.
